does this sound like breast cancer?

girl1806-17-2003, 12:22 PMi'm only 18 and i went to the doctor today to get a physical and he found a large lump on my left breast (which is bigger then my right). he told me not to worry and come back in 2 months. meanwhile, i've been on birth control for 3 months and i've been bleeding for about 3 weeks now. its on a daily basis and just recently stopped. the blood didn't even look like blood. it was brownish and there wasn't really a lot of it. just a little bit each day. it has stopped since i started in my 4th month of birth control pills. anyone know what this could be? my grandma just got breast cancer at age 75 but she got it removed and is now fine. please help!klayr06-17-2003, 12:58 PMHi! Your doctor told you to come back in two months so he can monitor the lump (any change in size of the lump or shape in your breast, etc.). Usually, breast cancer is a slow-moving cancer, so he feels that watching is less invasive than some of the other options. He also knows that it's rare for 18-year-olds to get it. The menstrual problems are probably due to your body adjusting to the birth control pills. That should even itself out. If it doesn't, you need to stay in close contact with the gyn.
With all of that said about breast lumps, you need to be at peace. If two months is going to drive you nuts, then insist on a biopsy. If you have the insurance coverage, or you feel that the procedure will put your mind at ease, go ahead and have it done. Anyone can sit and tell you that it's probably nothing, and certainly the doctor should be experienced enough to know what he's doing, but, doctor's are only people too. You're the one who has to get up and look at it in the mirror everyday. Do what makes you feel the most confident.girl1806-17-2003, 01:28 PMthanks for the advice. i'd also like to add that i had a pap smear in march and the doctor didnt feel any lumps...BrookeRobi7106-21-2003, 09:30 PMhttp://www.healthboards.com/ubb/idea.gif

Girl18,

I'm new to these boards but not new to breast cancer. I had my 3 year anniversary 2 days ago. Keep in mind that 80% of lumps are not cancer.

You're going to come up against people that will tell you that you are "too young" to get breast cancer but honey you aren't. I was only 29 when I was diagnosed and I'd been told that I was too young over and over again.

That is in no way, shape or form meant to throw you into a panic but if you're still unsure have a breast biopsy done. That's probably the safest way to really know.

Good luck http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/heart.gif
