Alternative Medicine, anyone use it?

bullun05-25-2005, 09:07 AMIn all of our research our family has read much about alternative medicine and holistic medicine assisting with the process of cancer treatment. Now I realize for many people this is still a very "far out there" approach, but I am curious if anyone else has researched it, or been treated themselves along with modern medicine?

My father has seen an Acupuncturist in the past and continues to do so now, in hopes to assist with the healing process. My father has been wonderful with his diet, but will also proceed to moving into a very organic diet also.
There has been a lot of information of people responding quite well to organic or microbiotic diets during cancer treatments etc.

If anyone else has experimented with these methods in addition or in place of modern medicine, I would love to hear your experiences! My father will continue to procede with his route of modern medicine and his surgery, but will continue to use these other methods too. Heck, whether it just eases his mind or truly helps him, it certainly can't hurt!positive4u05-28-2005, 01:17 AMbullun-I changed my diet to low fat, no dairy products, high lycopene, saw palmetto, low calorie, low sugar, higher vitamin D and antioxidants galore. Plus I exercised faithfully. All this did nothing to change my PSA or cancer. Surgery was the one thing that worked. But you are right in that it won't hurt & may even help some people.
Positive4U :)camero706-01-2005, 04:35 PMI've been using herbs, supplements, low fat diet, no red meat, exercise for 2 years. My PSA has remained stable with minor rises and falls.

Positive4U :)camero706-03-2005, 06:14 AMI call it active surveillence. I'm pretty comfortable with it right now and plan to continue it. If/when my PSA gets to 20 [a arbitrary #] I'll think about other solutions. Probably hormone therapy. However, some men will never need other treatments.
cambullun06-03-2005, 08:31 AMThanks to the all of you for your input and sharing what information you use. I finally thankfully saw my father this last week and spent a week visiting with family. He is incredibly upbeat and very positive. In fact since his diagnosis and scheduling of surgery he has been running 3.5 miles every other day and lifting his weights inbetween. Two of those days I ran with him, always struggling to keep at his pace! (A normal routine for him, but now he's added his weekends and holidays into the mix too.) His motivating factor being that, he won't be able to do any of those things for at least 6 weeks proceeding his surgery if not longer.

He's having surgery today, and in fact is on the operating table as I write this. Just to share with you, what he's been doing as alternative medicine, regularly seeing an acupuncturist and eating a microbiotic (low fat, all organic) type of diet. We don't anticipate for this to cure the cancer or make it go away, but to help prevent potential spreading or reoccurence, and to well length his life a bit longer no matter what the results of this surgery are today. And it gives him the feeling that he is doing all he can possibly do on his end. So he won't wonder the "what if" in the back of his head. None of this can hurt, and if it make syou feel better even just psychologically that's all that truly matters! :)

Keep your fingers crossed for us today. Of course we won't know any final results until later, I am keeping my positive (yet unrealistic) mindset that perhaps.. just perhaps we have been sparred anymore and it will have remained localized. Thank you all again for your continued support..and I shall keep you posted!
