Leep Procedure Question
kaleigh197406-21-2004, 11:09 AMQuick Back ground, I went for my first Pap smear in 6 years last month- I know stupid- It was abnormal- had colposcopy/ biopsy came back HSIL, Dr. recommends Leep procedure- but in the hospital out patient and under general anesthesia- why- all info I have read on net says this procedure is done in an office not under anesthesia. Why his decision?JLTJR06-21-2004, 11:36 AMHi,
My doctor offered to do it as out-patient also and totally under, however, my insurance company would only cover the procedure if done in the office with a local. At first I was worried because my doctor's preference was to do it as an out-patient procedure, so I assumed that must mean that the pain was pretty bad. Well, for me the pain wasn't bad at all, no worse than having the biopsy. In fact, I can't believe they put people out for this, but that is just me. Everybody is different and it may very well just depend on the doctor and the individual patient. I am sure you will find on this board others that are really glad they were out and some who wish they had been out. But again, for me, I am glad I was in and out of the office within 30 minutes and I felt fine. I did take a motrin about 30 minutes before I went in, but I am not even sure that was necessary.
Good luck and let us know how it goes. Either way, I am sure you will do just fine!PaNik571706-21-2004, 04:57 PMIt really is up to the doctor. Some prefer to have the patient asleep and relaxed. No matter how much you know ahead of time about how simple it is, it is impossible to totally relax in those stirrups with that big speculum inside of you. Some doctors just feel more confident with a completely relaxed patient and no anxiety to fight against. I also think it can depend a little on the severity of the lesions they intend to cut out, as well as their hospital/clinic/HMO's preferences.
Either way, it should be a breeze for you. I would prefer to have it done in the office the way I did, but I would really prefer to have my doc comfortable and confident when he is coming at my cervix with an instrument like an electric loop.
