countrygal03-21-2005, 03:40 PMA friend just called me. She was on her way to the hospital for a 30 day stay. She said, the Dr told her she had acute leukemia. That she had to go to the hospital in isolation for 30 days. That they were going to get bone marrow sample and that she would have to have radiation and chemo tx. He aslo told her that is was unusual to have two types of cancer. She had breast cancer 3 years ago took chemo txs and was in remission now for over a year. Can anyone share their stories or experiences?Marimac03-22-2005, 05:13 AMA friend just called me. She was on her way to the hospital for a 30 day stay. The good news is that they know what type of treatment she got the first time and how she responded. This will help them to provide the correct treatment the first time around as opposed to having to experiment in order to find the right treatment. Hopfully she will recover soon.countrygal03-22-2005, 10:36 PMI talked to my friend again last night. She was telling that she has to have 2 lines (tubes central lines?) inserted in her upper chest area for 2 different types of chemo, a shunt type tube in her head for chemo to the brain, and also the radiation. She sure seems taking this all well (better than me). Also that her dr had talked to a dr at MD Anderson and they are going to try a new type of experimental drugs.
Thank s for the replies and the info shared. Yes cancer once is bad enough, little lone two types. I hope the little girl does ok and that remission will find her again.randym43103-29-2005, 02:37 PMSorry to hear.
They say leukemia does not grow into other cancers, but I've wondered if the opposite (cancers growing into leukemia) could be true? I have a friend that had kidney cancer (removed kidney last year), and last month finds out he has CML leukemia.
One really good hope for your friend, that there ARE new drugs and trials for even newer drugs that they often call "magic bullets" in treating leulemia.

One other option and plus, Leukemia is a cancer that can actually be "cured" with a bone marrow transplant (even though very risky, 30% death rate. I think its more like 50%)cardshark06-12-2005, 09:52 PMI am currently 22 years old and have had cancer three times. The first time I had Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and did radiation and chemotherapy, the second time I had Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and did chemotherapy, and the third time I had Renal Cell Carcinoma and only had to have surgery. So tell your friend to hang in there.
I have a poem framed in my room and it is what keeps me going. I don't know who actually wrote the poem but it's called DON'T QUIT and it goes like this:
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all up hill,
When the funds are low, and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest if you must, but don't you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As everyone of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
When he might have won had he struck it out
Don't give up though the pace seems slow,
You may succeed with another blow.
Success if failure turned inside out,
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far;
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit,
It's when things seem worse, that you must not quit.
I hope you and your friend get as much from this poem as I have. I am currently fighting epilepsy and am getting ready to have brain surgery and there are days that I don't know how much longer I can take it and I read this poem and it helps me go on. So tell your friend to hang in there and I will be praying for her.countrygal03-20-2006, 10:03 AMAnd update: My friend had found a donor, her sister. But a few days before her transplant she had become sick again. She was started on a steroid and she became very short of breath. They transfered her to the hospital that the Dr. was to do the transplant. But she was having so much problems and become too weak. She told me they were giving her 3 doses of chemo aday along with the steroid. Then the other night something happened and they took her down to have a cat-scan of the brain. Her BP and resp. dropped and they coded her. Her sister called me yesterday and said she is on life support and that she is unresponsive. So now i am praying and waiting on any news. Sometimes life just doesnt seem right. Sorry for the sad story but needed to share!
